Jared Lutes has gone from his making music in his basement to the big screen.

The award-winning Moncton folk singer, who spent more than a decade playing with cover bands and at weddings, will see his single “I Am Overcome” featured in a major American movie.

“I like to say it’s a 15-year overnight success,” he said.

Lutes’s song has been chosen for the film “Life at These Speeds”, starring Tim Roth, due to be released later this year.

He says he did it all from his home-based studio in Moncton, which doubles as his kids’ playroom.

“On one hand it’s very endearing and inspirational,” he said. “On the other hand it’s always footsteps [and] ‘Daddy! Daddy! Daddy!’”

The studio, full of music with a Maritime flair, serves as a constant reminder of his humble New Brunswick roots.

Pointing to a recorder on the shelf, he identifies it as his wife’s from when she attended elementary school.

“I thought I need some kind of flute for this, so I grabbed it,” he said.

Lutes hopes to build a long career as a TV and film composer from his home in Moncton.

“I grew up here. My family is from here. My wife’s family is from here, and we’ve got roots here,” he said.

Making it as a singer-songwriter in New Brunswick isn’t easy, he says.

“The market here is a lot for the party bands and the cover songs,” he said, before adding that his recent success “proves it’s not all about location anymore.”

“With the right song and the right performers and the right band, you can produce really good music from any location,” he said.
